Taka Naka

“I could have danced all night” a running theme from Tata Naka fashion week collection.

The true sister act Tamara and Natasha Surguladze come together to create a designer name of Taka Naka, the twin sisters childhood nick names an obvious choice for a brand. Graduating from Central St Martins in 2000 the sisters went on to create a brand that reflected simple, clean and elegant women’s clothing. Along with completely original digital prints that reflect quirky memories from their shared past.  As there brand has grown the twins have branched out touching in designs of jewellery, swimwear, scarf’s and children’s wear.

Inspiration for the sister’s collection shown in London fashion week comes from the movement and silhouette of dance. The Taka Naka woman is said to be “[...] adventurous and romantic, with great sense of humour. She doesn’t need to follow the trends but is capable of creating her own unique style.” Truly keeping their designs original they create there own in-house prints from paintings and photography, I feel this makes there design very original and beautiful. They source ideas by “[...] spending a lot of time in libraries and the textile archive at A&V. Trips to antique fairs and art exhibition [...]” Because of this rich income of research from strong resources has reflected on an absolutely feminine and desirable collection of clothing. Not only will the Taka Naka woman want a piece but any woman who loves that fun retro twist.

Taka Naka showed there new collection on Tuesday 21st of September in the Portico Rooms 2011. Inspired by dancers the clothing conveyed the movement of gauzy chiffon trains finished dresses as the models moved. In contrast with the firm structure of the heaver fabric adding a theatrical spin on designs. Through flashes of skin peeking through high waited skirts and crop tops making the collection have that fantastic retro inspired femininity.

I love it!

Local gallerys

My town in Orkney is small and quiet during the winter, during summer you have the lively hum of the tourist season but all year round i feel that we have a great art community. The Pier Arts Center is a newly renovated building with a beautiful space for works. In the main exhibition area there is a show on by Scottish artist Jim Lambie. I just thought this show was very worth mentioning!
I just think the floor is so cool and mesmerizing. I wish i had a photo of a battle helmet sprayed fluorescent green encased in glitter spotted resin. AMAZING

Let them eat COLOUR CAKE

As one of my good friends was away for his birthday party we decided to have a mini dinner meeting for him. We thought it would be nice to keep things a surprise... till he called and said he couldn't make it, so the ball was dropped there. Eventually we decided to tell him of the lovely wee get together. But to the point The cake that was made for him was AMAZING!!!!!

The candles just out on the Smartie encrusted cake!

From the outside amazingly colourfull...
But from the inside more COLOURFULL

I just thought that it was well worth mentioning!

my summer so far

Some of the paintings i have up
I like to paint so over the summer i gave myself a mini project to try and do some form of paining or drawing each day.  Because of this i have a rather large stack of images now and what better to do as a poor student than sell them! So that's what im doing! I cant quite quit the day job but its something more productive than sitting trolling the internet all day!
I hope you like My images!

My men

Images from my sketchbook i hope that you like them! Mostly i worked with water colour and ink pen, there the one i got the best results with!
some of my drawings form my sketchbook.
For our mens wear section of first year we had to design a pare of trousers. A nice beige cotton twill fabric for £4 a meter and some heavily ribbed knit i got done by the fancy machines that just go form the kit technicians. For some reason the only photos i have of my trousers are these ones so i guess i will just make do with showing you them! :3
very un-ironed back of mens trousers.

also very creased front of my trousers
My trousers are full length to the ankle, they sit at the waist and then the crotch come to just above the knee and the heavy knitted part starts just below the knee. My first attempt of making mens clothing AND I WOULD SAY I DID ALRIGHT! Looking forward to second year and all the making fun we will have!

Māori!

Before I started the course at Heriot Watt i decidedI would take a year out from all the hard work of life and see the world a little bit! So i went to New Zealand. Having secured my place at university i was free to go till 2010! I took full advantage of being in a different culture. The history of the native Māori people was great and well shown in the museums of NZ. I spent many hours in the Museum of Auckland looking at the great craftsmanship these people had and still practice in there culture. The carvings are very intricate, the tattoos telling a story beautiful joining together and the traditional clothing was made with fine care and knowledge of weaving and beading. Although the Traditional clothing was not made form fine materials like silks of fine threads, the skill to make them must have been great! The straws, leafs and other materials all had a relevant  link to there culture, respect for the land.

One of the many drawings i made form Auckland Museum, not very finished but i like it none the less.

I hope one day i can visit New Zealand again! To many things to do just for the one visit to that country!

Men and all There Glory

DRAWING TIME
I menswear we have been encouraged to broaden our style type in drawing. I took a wee look through the internets on google and found many lovely images of men in different styles. I hope to have the chance to play with different materials (water colours, ink, photoshop, photography...) I like the idea of mixed media to even draw into images with stitch line from a sewing machine.

Photographic face used with simple line drawing clothing.

Like the mix of photography and drawing.

Very loose and scratchy style used with water colour and a water proof pen for lining

love the use of water clolour.

Trousers

New Jeans project for men's wear. To make some jeans for men changing detailing and fabrics.  Really enjoying the construction of the jeans so far. The first part of the project was to make a jean bag, this would let us practice the front zipper and pockets and how to make a jetted pocket for the back.

I like the layering of the different fabrics.

Add differnt shape to the bottum of the trouser.
Again different layers of fabric

turned up ends

I love the ribed tight fabric at the bottum end of the trousers.

PIXEL

I do love a bit of Pixelated images
Was looking at some of the up and coming men's wear items as we have just started the section, MENS WEAR... I came across this mood board and fell in love! No so much for the creepy first image of the mans face being like a book but the rest i just find great!

Add captionLooking at T-shit and i came across this cardigan made up of lots of different materials. i love how it has become all twisted and uneven!

working drawing of a Tshirt made up of different materials

short cardigan over the t-shirt, Christopher Shannon

I like the sliced layering and colour of this origanal deigned T-shirt.

consider a neck line...

How to make a plain T-shirt interesting, i like the addition of the Zips on the sleeve.
Sibling Collection 5

I think thing i will ahve to consider ina Tshirt is that youdont always ahve to stick to traditonal designs. Try to think outside the box and play with ideas of shape, form, texture, seaming, Options are endless! Althought i will not be making a t-shirt in this section of the course i will try to keep in mind to not be conventinal and play with ideas.
